12 ways to stay safe in the sun

12 ways to stay safe in the sun, while having the time of your lives.

  1. Drink plenty of liquids. Water is the best, cause it's natural to your body composition. Avoid heated bottles of water that have been in that hot car. Also, avoid extremely COLD water, when in the heat. Remember your body, needs to convert the liquid intake to a temperature it can accept. Why make your physical being have to work harder.
  2. Avoid alcohol in  the heat. Sure, you're young, you can take it. Just remember this though. You are doing the opposite of number one above. You are putting yourself at RISK. Oh, do not serve alcohol to minors, it's not cool.
  3. Use sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more that provides UVA  and UVB protection.
  4. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure to the sun.
  5. Stay inside or in the shade from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  6. Wearing a wide brimmed hat, long sleeves and pants recommended when outside.
  7. Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours and after sweating heavily or swimming.
  8. Apply a sun blocker to ears, lips, back of neck, throat, back of hands and tops of your feet.
  9. Avoid tanning booths and tanning lamps as they do cause damage to the skin like the sun.
  10. Use sunglasses that have 100% UV protection
  11. Take extra care with infants over and under 6 months old and the elderly. Special note here. Do not apply sunscreen to babies under 6 months old and do keep them out of direct sunlight. As always keep the very young and the very old people out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
  12. Use common sense when eating food. Eat frequently, but in small amounts. Avoid over eating. The sun loves baking that cold salad with mayonnaise. Avoid getting sick. When you are done, put the salad with mayonnaise back in the cooler.  Time to go get an ice cream or popsicle and enjoy it in the shade.
